Best Advice for Hygiene in a Martial Arts School

“Cleanliness is important, and more than that is the physical fitness to attain healthy body and mind.” – Sandeep Singh

This quote is spot on when it comes to training in martial arts. Personal hygiene is crucial because it teaches you discipline and helps you avoid health risks. By being in such close proximity with training partners when you have a cold, skin infection, or other health problems may spread an illness quickly. Any illness brought into the dojo becomes everyone’s problem and will be looked upon as disrespectful.

We have provided the following tips when it comes to hygiene:
  • Shower before and after training.

Shower before training, especially if you have a manual labor job and have been sweating. Taking a shower after class is important as it reduces the chance of you incurring skin diseases. A warm shower helps relax the body after working out.

  • Wear deodorant.

Deodorant helps keep your underarms smelling fresh. Deodorant includes alcohol and/or other chemicals, which eliminates or reduces bacteria.

  • Wash gym clothes regularly.

Bacteria can grow from sweat-soaked clothing over time; therefore, you do not want to keep your sweaty, dirty outfits sitting in a laundry bin. Keeping your gym clothes clean and fresh is essential for the atmosphere of The DoJANG.

  • Wash your hands after using the bathroom.

You are guaranteed to get germs on your hands, especially when lifting the lid, wiping, flushing the toilet, and opening the door.

  • Tie your hair back.

There are a few martial artists that have learned the hard way when they did not tie their hair back when training. Hair gets caught easily and can be accidentally pulled or stepped on. Depending on your length of hair, you may want to braid it. Keeping your hair tied back allows you to stay focused on the task at hand.

  • Avoid wearing jewelry.

Wearing jewelry as you train can be dangerous, as it can catch on clothing or other items and cause injury. It is a distraction for you and your fellow martial artists. Any rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and watches should be removed before entering the dojo or any competition event.

  • Wrap your injuries, especially open wounds.

Make sure to properly wrap any cuts with bandages or tape. Wrapping helps protect your injuries from further damage and prevents the spread of bacteria and viruses. It will also limit exposure to other martial artists from being exposed to blood-borne pathogens and other potential contaminates.

  • Avoid touching your face during training.

Keeping your hands away from your face reduces the risks of germs from spreading, which may cause you from getting sick. Also, making sure hands are kept away from your face shows that you have self-control, especially when you are training.

  • Report feeling sick immediately

Do you have questions?

We have answers

Having questions regarding you or your child’s participation in a martial arts program? We have listed our most common 10 questions and answers. We are also available to answer any other questions you may have. Feel free to call us or stop by at TheDoJANG.

The DoJANG specializes in Taekwondo and Karate. We also provide Taekwondo classes for people who have special needs.

The one that fits you is the best! Karate uses more hand attacks with the legs mostly grounded and only used as backup while Taekwondo involves more kicking, jumping, spinning and uses hands as a backup. However, both disciplines teach numerous benefits, such as patience, respect, confidence, strength, flexibility, balance, and self-discipline.

We have had students as young as 2 ½ years old to 70 years old. Just know, you are never too old. Having children learn at an early age allows them to develop better fundamental motor skills and to interact with other students. The DoJANG has three age groups: Hungee and Yagee Club, ages 3 to 7 years old; Juniors, ages 8-12 years old; and Adults, ages 13+. For students who have special needs, the Junior age group is 4-10 years old, and the Adult age group is 10+ years old.

Safety is our top priority. Our goal is for everyone to learn fighting and self-defense skills in a controlled, supervised environment. Our instructors have been fully trained and have been associated with The DoJANG for 15+ years. Our instructors are trained in first aid and CPR, and we have strict safety guidelines established at our school.

To get the most out of training, students should attend at least 8 classes per month (twice per week) to see progress and to retain what they learn. As students advance in the color belt ranks, The DoJANG offers other classes: Advance to Black, Over-The-Sun, and Weapons. These classes provide students a more in-depth learning in their discipline allowing them to become more well-rounded. Students advancing to become a black belt should attend at least 12 classes per month (approximately three classes per week.)

It is quite the opposite. Martial arts reduces aggression in students. It teaches self-control, self-discipline, and conflict resolution skills and improves self-esteem and attitude. Google’s response when addressing a similar question is spot on: “By practicing martial arts, you can master your mind and your emotions. That can help you develop greater emotional stability, assertiveness, self-confidence, and lessen aggressive feelings. Increased self-esteem.”

Part of our program includes meditation. We practice meditation and encourage students to meditate at home. The benefits of meditation enhance attention, emotional awareness, kindness, compassion, and mental calmness, which helps in difficult situations. It also teaches students to be kind to themselves and more caring towards others.

Yes. Wearing a uniform sets the stage for uniformity in the class and allows the student to feel a part of the dojo. It removes the burden and eliminates competition between students as far as to who has the best or nicest outfit. It promotes a sense of teamwork even though a martial artist’s path is very individualized in many instances. Instructors see students and keep everyone focused on learning and training.

We offer competitive pricing with various membership options to fit the student’s budget. We also provide uniforms and equipment at affordable prices.

The DoJANG has one of the best and most challenging curricula in earning a black belt. It takes at least a minimum of three years. Talent is great, but it takes hard work, dedication, and diligence in earning a black belt at The DoJANG. But, there is no race. Students make their own path. Here, at The DoJANG, we believe martial arts is a way of life, a path to personal development and a means to develop qualities. Learning never ends – it just goes deeper in many aspects.

Not every person will love martial arts right away. That is the primary reason we offer a free trial class so that students can experience the excitement in learning and the fun associated with martial arts before committing to a program. We are here to help and to make the most out of students learning martial arts.
