Rules at The DoJANG: Ensuring Safety and Respect in Martial Arts Training
At The DoJANG, we establish rules to promote civil behavior, maintain organization, and ensure the safety of all students. These rules apply to various situations, including unwritten rules that may be communicated through a glance or nod. For instance, when students are not participating in class, they should sit or stretch quietly. Sitting upright—without slouching, lying down, or leaning against the wall—is essential. Although we don’t post this rule, instructors may give a look or gesture to remind students to maintain proper posture.
Here are some important rules to follow:
- Respect the Kwanjangnim: Always acknowledge the head of the school, the Kwanjangnim, by bowing when he enters or exits the school, his office, or the mat. Whether you’re in class or seated quietly, stand and bow. While he may or may not respond, your acknowledgment is crucial. Extend this respect to The DoJANG Masters and masters from other schools.
- Obey Instructors and Higher Ranks: Show respect to your instructors and higher-ranking students at all times. Respond to commands with “Yes, Sir,” “No, Sir,” “Yes, Ma’am,” or “No, Ma’am.” Additionally, always respect your parents or guardians.
- Honor the School: Never engage in any behavior that dishonors our school or instructor.
- Respect the Dojo Mat: Bow when stepping onto and off the mat. Keep shoes, sneakers, and sandals off the mat. Avoid eating, drinking, chewing gum, or horseplay during class. Do not leave the mat without the instructor’s dismissal, and wait for the instructor’s acknowledgment before entering a class.
- Support Lower Ranks: In class, prioritize helping the lowest-ranked students. Higher-ranked students should demonstrate patience and lead by example, modeling proper conduct for all.
- Promote Peace: Never be willing to fight for any reason. Concealed weapons or harmful items are prohibited. Only use training weapons approved by a Master at the dojo. Refrain from profanity, interruptions, loud or condescending speech, and tantrums.
- Organize Personal Belongings: Avoid leaving personal items scattered around. Use The DoJANG equipment bag to store your gear, clothes, shoes, and necessities, and keep it on the storage rack.
- Maintain Cleanliness: Contribute to keeping the dojo clean and organized. Take the initiative to pick up and clean areas, assist instructors by sweeping and disinfecting the mat between classes, and notify instructors or administrators of any issues, such as water leaks or restroom supplies. Lastly, do not touch the mirrors.
By following these guidelines, we foster a respectful and supportive environment that benefits everyone at The DoJANG.
